Cloth Diaper FAQ
How many diapers do I need?
It depends on the type of diaper you want to use. Each diaper category specifies a recommended number of diapers, but expect that you will need 24 diapers for full-time use, washing every third day. More if you wash less frequently, fewer if you wash more often.
How should they be washed?
We recommend washing the diapers every third day. Use a cotton program and wash at 60 degrees Celsius, preferably choosing one or two extra rinses. Never use fabric softener on your diapers; it destroys the absorbent effect. Liners can often be gently tumble dried at a low temperature, but we do not recommend tumble drying the outer covers. Line drying is the gentlest method for the environment, the diapers, and your wallet.
Can I wash other things with the diapers?
Absolutely! As long as your other laundry can be washed at 60 degrees, and as long as you do not fill the washing machine more than 3/4 full.
Isn't it disgusting to mix cloth diapers with other laundry?
If you feel it's unpleasant to mix laundry, you can start with a rinse cycle with only the diapers to rinse them out. Then add your other laundry and wash at 60 degrees with an extra rinse.
How often should I change diapers?
It varies from child to child, but expect to change every 2-3 hours, except for night diapers which last a whole night.
The diapers leak, what am I doing wrong?
Sometimes it can be that the diaper leaks. Check that the diaper is fitting properly; maybe the child's body shape has changed and you need to fasten it differently.
Have you used any oily-based cream? If so, the diaper may need to be washed out properly. Try washing the diapers a few times to see if the problem is resolved. We recommend Weleda's nappy change cream for diaper rashes. It's gentle both for the child's skin and for the diapers.
Are you using the right type of liner for your child? Some children urinate a lot at once and require a liner that can handle it. To see which type of liner might suit your child, you can check our overview of materials in liners.
Perhaps you simply need to change the diaper a bit more often?
