What is a Fitted Overnight Diaper? A Simple Guide
Has the term 'fitted diaper' bewildered you? It may sound complicated and intimidating, but together, let's decipher its meaning and its usage.
What is a fitted diaper?
Simply put, a fitted diaper, or an overnight diaper, is designed to absorb moisture from every angle, both inside and out. They are typically bulky, meant to last a whole night. A significant point to note: these diapers do not have a waterproof layer (PUL), meaning they won't be leak-proof against clothes. That's where an outer PUL shell comes in.
How are fitted diapers used?
Concerned about using a shell? The good news is that the shell usually doesn't need changing as frequently as the diaper itself. Only when the shell gets dirty, you'd wash it. The diaper is changed at each diaper time. The process is straightforward: put the fitted diaper on the baby, then fit the shell over it.
Our fitted diapers come with two inserts that snap into place. Once the diaper is dirty, it can be washed without unsnapping the inserts.
When to use a fitted diaper?
Due to their high absorbency making them bulkier than regular cloth diapers, fitted diapers are often used overnight. However, you can use them during the day, possibly without both inserts. It's all about finding what suits your baby. They're also handy during prolonged usage times, like car trips. If your baby is particularly active or sleeps on their belly and experiences leaks, fitted diapers might be the solution. In essence, they can be used anytime; there's no definitive right or wrong.
How many fitted diapers do I need?
The number you need varies based on usage and washing frequency. If you're using them only at night and wash every third day, around four should suffice. If you find you're changing during the night, you'll need more. If washing is more frequent, you'll need fewer. We believe four is a good starting point, hence we offer packs of four.
Washing and drying fitted diapers
Wash the diapers at 60°C (140°F). The inserts can remain attached. Bear in mind, these diapers can take up to 24 hours to dry post-wash. Speed up drying with a tumble dryer; they can handle it.
Tips!
- Ensure the shell fully covers the fitted diaper to prevent clothes from getting damp.
- If the diaper feels stiff after washing, tumble dry it for a few minutes or rub it between your hands.
- Hemp diapers might require up to five washes to reach maximum absorbency. However, they can be used after the first wash.
- Inform any partners or caregivers that this diaper type requires a shell to be leak-proof (unless you enjoy surprises of the wetter kind).
